As a youngster growing up in the western lifestyle of Prescott Arizona, I knew I wanted to make the gear admired by all those who earned a living on a horse. A Lucky Seven kit for my birthday and I was hooked! I learned to tool by studying pictures and by peering over the shoulder of any tooler who would tolerate me. In the years following my family’s move to Phoenix, I worked at N. Porters, Wallace Steven’s Saddlery and Bill Porter’s Saddle Shop… continuously pursuing anyone willing to share a few secrets.
After a hitch in the Army’s 7th SFG, I returned to the family ranch in Wickenburg, then landed in the construction boom in Phoenix. Eventually, although I hadn’t tooled for nearly twenty years, my wife Jill, insisted I tool her a new cowhorse saddle. Soon thereafter I began providing custom pieces to trainers, ropers, and the Horse Show community. I’m now tooling full time on a custom order basis and still enjoy studying the work of others and sharing what I have learned. My own style has now emerged as I have endeavored to create a fresh new look, while honoring the rich tradition of western floral tooling.
