About us...

Paul started tooling leather in 1974 in El Paso, TX under the tutelage of Jim Resley, who was a friend of Paul’s dad, Bill Zalesak. In 2001 Paul moved with his family to Albuquerque, NM where they founded Leather Wranglers Inc. A leather artist, knife maker, and expert in metallurgy, Paul's love of the leather craft and his quest to find a high performance swivel knife is the reason he developed the SK-3 Swivel Knife. Paul has taken his passion for cutting-edge tools to another level in his non-traditional design of the Leather Wranglers Round Knife with its signature pull-cut feature, the Tranto and Guppy trim knives, and other innovative knives and tools. Having done extensive research in the technology and science of metals and metal alloys, his passion is to make quality tools that you would be proud to own and look forward to using. Paul teaches seminars on swivel knife use and techniques, sharpening fundamentals and cutting edge technology. He also authored a series of “On the Edge” articles for the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal.

His wife, Rosa, is originally from New York and was swept off her feet when she met Paul in El Paso in 1983. Although she grew up in the heart of the Big Apple, she has grown to love the western culture and the beautiful southwest. As a business partner and Paul's help-mate, Rosa manages the business with the same passion and commitment of uncompromised quality that Leather Wranglers stands for.

Paul’s leather art favorites include journals, binders, purses, belts, and mules. He has earned several first place awards in the New Mexico State Fair, including “Best of Show” and also won first place for a reversible belt in International Internet Leathercrafters’ Guild’s (IILG) leather carving contest. Some of his award-winning pieces were on display at the Mountain Artists Guild Gallery in Prescott, AZ. In Albuquerque Paul worked closely with and learned new techniques from one of the leather crafting greats, Billy Wootres, whom - as Paul later discovered - had been the one that taught Jim Resley.

Paul is a proud member of New Mexico Roadrunner Leather Artisan's Guild, Colorado Saddle Makers Association (CSMA), Lone Star Leather Crafters of Fort Worth, TX, Leatherworker.net, and Leatherpros.net. He is also a member of IILG and served as Vice President from 2012 to 2016.
